My Idol

I’ve been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Gal 2:20, NIV.

It was the beginning of a new year. The feeling of holidays, joy, and cordiality still existed in the stores. In a large supermarket I was taking advantage of the very good bargains. A song by a very popular artist, even considered an idol by some, was playing over the public address system. But I was so accustomed to songs that are played so often at the end of the year that I didn’t even pay attention. After some time I realized that the songs being played were all by the same singer.

However, as I left the store, I discovered that the songs were being sung live, not by the original artist but by someone whose voice was very similar and who looked a lot like him—same clothing, hair, same way of holding the microphone, and the way he stood. And at that moment the performer said something so that I would associate him with the singer he was imitating.

This was hard to believe! Why would someone want to be so much like another person that he would, even for a few minutes, try to deceive someone regarding his own identity? During the entire walk back home I thought about this. If I concern myself so much with wanting to imitate another person, no matter how good she or he may be, I am still a sinner, filled with errors, vices, and bad intentions. So how can I not make an effort to imitate Jesus?

Jesus! Yes, I should imitate Him! God, who became man so as to serve as a model. He is an example without sin, filled with love and kindness, always helping the needy people around Him, a friend of children, youth, adults, and the elderly. Jesus always had a prayer in His heart, was always doing the will of the Father, always preaching and teaching people how to choose the right path, the path that leads to Heaven.

Jesus is the One Who left His throne of glory and suffered humiliation to the point of dying on a cross to save me, to give me a chance to enjoy eternal life. Jesus! Yes, He should be my idol!
